No. 12 Volleyball Edged at No. 11 UW-Stevens Point

The No. 12 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team rallied from two-sets-to-one down Wednesday night but was unable to complete the comeback in a 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 16-25, 15-8 setback at 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
 
The Warhawks (12-4 overall, 1-1 WIAC), who entered Wednesday on a seven-match win streak, were held to a .076 hitting percentage, their second-lowest output of the season.
 
Junior right side hitter Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) registered a team-high nine kills, while senior outside hitter Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) posted eight kills and 12 digs. Junior middle hitter Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) totaled seven kills, five digs and five blocks, and freshman outside hitter Alexandra Bialo (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) recorded seven kills.
 
Senior setter Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) finished with 32 assists, 10 digs and five blocks. Sophomore libero Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and freshman defensive specialist Elizabeth Tworek (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic) led the defense with 23 and 16 digs, respectively. Senior defensive specialist Tessa Weber (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) also contributed 10 digs and matched Robinson with two service aces.
 
UW-Whitewater jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first set and didn't look back, clinching the set on back-to-back kills by Racky.
 
The Pointers (19-2, 2-0) raced out to a 6-3 advantage in the second set en route to leveling the match at 1-1.
 
The Warhawks started the third set on a 6-2 run, but UW-Stevens Point responded with six straight points and never trailed again in the period.
 
UW-Whitewater forced a fifth set after claiming 10 of the fourth set's first 14 points. Bialo collected three kills and freshman middle hitter Ashton Doll (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) added two kills during the run.
 
With the fifth set tied at 3-3, the Pointers scored three straight points, and the Warhawks got no closer than two the rest of the way.
 
UW-Whitewater returns to action this Friday on the first day of the two-day UW-Oshkosh National Preview. The team takes on St. Mary's (Ind.) at 4 p.m. and Carthage at 6 p.m.
