Women’s Soccer Upends No. 3 Washington-St. Louis

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team handed third-ranked Washington-St. Louis its first loss of the season Saturday in a 1-0 victory at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.

Senior forward Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) tallied the game-winning goal, her second game-winner of the season and sixth goal overall, in the 59th minute for the Warhawks (5-1), who avenged a loss against Wash U. in last season's NCAA Tournament national quarterfinals.

"It was a great individual play by Bri, a hustle play," UW-Whitewater coach Ryan Quamme said. "The goalkeeper misplayed the ball, and Bri got a touch and went around her. It wasn't the prettiest goal, but it was about Bri's commitment to get there and force the mistake."

Freshman goalkeeper Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) totaled three saves in her third shutout of the season.

The Bears (4-1) outshot UW-Whitewater by a 12-6 margin, including an 8-1 advantage in the first half.

The Warhawks came out aggressively in the second half, out-shooting the Bears 5-4 in the final 45 minutes.

"Our game plan was to weather the first 30 minutes," Quamme said. "In the second half, we started believing in ourselves. We executed what we talked about at halftime, and had greater chances in the second half. We displayed a much better commitment to finding a scoring chance after halftime."

After Reid's goal, UW-Whitewater staved off a pair of shots over the next five minutes, a corner kick in the 85th and an shot on goal in the final minute of action.

Quamme said it was a collective effort by the defense that kept the ball out of the net.

"Sara (Klimisch) was excellent in goal, Lauren (Otto) and Payton (DeLuga) were very good, and Mackenzie (Serbousek) played her best game of the season," Quamme said. "The entire team, including the midfielders and forwards, were defending in the last 30 minutes and making sure we had numbers behind the ball.

"We won a lot of balls out of the air, which is a huge strength of Wash U. Our ability to be stronger in the air was the difference between last year's game and this year's."

UW-Whitewater will take on 17th-ranked DePauw (Ind.) Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Bloomington. DePauw tied Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
