Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) scored a goal in each half to lift the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Luther College Wednesday night in Whitewater. The Warhawks have won four in a row and improve to 5-1 overall. Luther draws even at 1-1-1 on the season.
Â
The Warhawks put pressure on the Norse early, firing four shots in the first 12 minutes of play.
Â
Nineteen minutes into the match Pottle corralled a pass from
Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) and knocked it across the goal line to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Â
The lead was short lived as the Norse retaliated with a goal in the 23rd minute to tie the game.
Â
With seven minutes left in the half,
Jordan Jackson (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) fired a shot on goal but the Luther goalkeeper made the stop and the teams entered halftime tied at one.
Â
Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) tried to break the tie three minutes into the second half but UW-W was again denied by the Norse keeper.
Â
UW-W was relentless with their pressure as the half wore on, recording three more shots on goal before capitalizing in the 84th minute.
Â
With time ticking down, Reid found Pottle for her second goal of the game and a 2-1 Warhawk lead.
Â
Luther made an effort to send the game to overtime with a header in the 89th minute but
Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) was there to make the save and preserve the victory.
Â
Klimisch made three saves in the match to improve to 4-0 this season.
Â
The Warhawks will travel to Bloomington, Illinois this weekend for a pair of matches hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. UW-W will face No. 3 Washington-St. Louis on Saturday at 5:30 pm, and pending Saturday's results, the Warhawks will play either No. 17 DePauw or Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday.
