The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team downed a pair of Division III foes and was edged by a scholarship program Sunday in a trio of non-conference dual matches at Wangerin Courts.

The Warhawks (4-1 overall) fell 5-4 against Cardinal Stritch to open the day before besting Edgewood by an 8-1 tally and St. Norbert in a 9-0 sweep.

UW-Whitewater started strong against Cardinal Stritch (1-0) by winning two of three doubles matches. Senior Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) combined for an 8-3 triumph at No. 1, and juniors Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) teamed up for an 8-3 victory at No. 3.

Beck was first to put the Warhawks on the board in singles play, recording a 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth position.

McGuire pulled out a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 3, but the Wolves claimed the last match to edge UW-Whitewater by a single point.

Despite surrendering the No. 6 singles slot by default, the Warhawks didn't surrender a set in the remaining eight matches against Edgewood (4-4).

Senior Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) registered an 8-0 shutout at the No. 1 spot, and junior Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) and freshman Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) duplicated the effort with an 8-0 triumph at No. 3. Beck and junior Gabriella Gregorio (Roselle, IL/Bartlett) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the second position.

Alexander won in straight sets at No. 3 singles to give UW-Whitewater a three-point lead, and Gregorio sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5. Talyansky (No. 1), Goebel (No. 2) and Slicker (No. 4) were also straight-set winners.

The Warhawks swept the three doubles flights against St. Norbert (4-3), and didn't surrender more than three games in any singles set for their second sweep of the season.

UW-Whitewater resumes action Saturday at Wangerin Courts with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up against UW-La Crosse at 9 a.m. The team returns to play later that day against Principia (Ill.) at 4 p.m.
