The No. 16 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team extended its win streak to 11 matches Sunday with victories over Wabash (Ind.) and Edgewood on Senior Day at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
The Warhawks (18-4 overall), also ranked fourth in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, bested Wabash, ranked 12th in the region, by a 7-2 score. UW-Whitewater added a 9-0 sweep over Edgewood to conclude the day.
Against Wabash (11-10), the Warhawks won the first five singles matches of the contest. Senior
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) recovered from a first-set loss to clinch the match with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 slot.
Seniors
Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) were first on the board for UW-Whitewater, tallying straight-set wins at the first and sixth positions, respectively. Senior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) gave the team its third point with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 5, and sophomore
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) set up Treis' clincher with a 7-6 (7), 6-0 victory at No. 4.
Schnarr and senior
Scott Butler (Eagan, MN/Eagan) posted an 8-4 win at the second doubles flight, and Navartil and freshman
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) teamed up at the third slot for an 8-3 triumph.
In the match against Edgewood (4-9), the Warhawks started the match with three straight doubles wins. Navratil and sophomore
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) registered an 8-0 shutout at the No. 3 spot. Humphreys and Treis recorded an 8-1 triumph at No. 1, and Calabria and freshman
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
Zurowski tallied a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 4 singles, while Butler, Engelhart and Calabria surrendred just one game apiece in straight-set wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6, respectively.
Schnarr (No. 2) and Bisbee (No. 1) each added victories in straight sets.
Following the Wabash match, Bisbee, Butler, Humphreys, Schnarr and Treis were recognized for their achievements during their careers. Over the last four seasons, the Warhawks have qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times and own a 79-32 record in dual matches.
Bisbee, Humphreys and Schnarr have been a part of the program for all four years. Butler has been on the roster for the last three years, and Treis has been a member of the team for the last two.
UW-Whitewater continues play April 15-16 in St. Louis, Mo. The Warhawks face No. 13 Washington-St. Louis on the 15th at 4 p.m., then take on Division II Missouri-St. Louis on the 16th at 11 a.m.
