Whitewater, Wis. – The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team finished with two wins for the weekend after splitting two games on Sunday against UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Warhawks (20-6 overall, 8-4 WIAC) dropped the first game by a score of 9-4, and rebounded in the second game with a 1-0 win.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater posted a run in the bottom of the first inning, two in the third, and one in the fourth inning. UW-Oshkosh (12-15-1 overall, 5-7 WIAC) tallied three runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings to take game one.
Sophomore pitcher
Lake Bachar (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) pitched eight innings in the loss and moved to 5-3 on the season. He allowed six runs on 10 hits and struck out five. Freshman
Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) and junior
Matt Langlie (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) relieved Bachar in the ninth inning.
Sophomore centerfielder
Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) lead the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off home run to give the Warhawks the early lead. Bryden finished 2-for-4, with two runs score, while drawing two base on balls. Freshman third baseman
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), junior designated hitter
Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, IL/Guilford), and junior shortstop
Jordan Kuczynski (Germantown/Germantown) each finished 2-for-4 from the plate. Aldridge and Chamberlain each had a run batted in.
Sophomore outfielder
Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West), senior catcher
Dane Burman (Milton, Wis./Milton), and freshman second baseman
Connor Schneider (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) each finished with a hit a piece.
In the second game, Chamberlain doubled to right center to score sophomore first baseman
Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) in the bottom of the first inning, which ended up being the game winning run.
The Titans put pressure on the Warhawks twice, by loading the bases in the top of the second and fifth innings, but got out of it thanks to great pitching by senior
Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake).
Morgan scattered eight hits over seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season (4-0). Jones who started the game in right field came in to pitch two scoreless innings and pick up his third save of the season.
Fleischman, Jones, and Kuczynski all joined Chamberlain with a hit a piece in the night cap.
UW-Whitewater hosts Carthage College for a single game Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
