By: Christian van Helden, Athletic Communications Intern

The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Baseball team split the doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

UW-Whitewater won the first game 7-1 thanks to 10 hits and a complete-game effort by junior right-hander Mike Nompleggi (Oconto Falls/Oconto Falls). UW-Oshkosh won the nightcap 8-4 with a 10-hit game of its own.

In Game 1, the Warhawks (19-5, 7-3 WIAC) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by senior Trent Diekvoss (Beaver Dam/Beaver Dam) that scored sophomore Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, IL/Guilford). UW-Oshkosh answered back in the top of the third with a solo homerun to left field to tie the game 1-1.

With runners on first and third in the third, an RBI single to left by junior Jordan Kuczynski (Germantown/Germantown) gave UW-Whitewater a 2-1 lead as freshman Matt Wary (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) came around to score. The Warhawks added two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and a passed ball. The Warhawks tacked on three runs in the later innings.

Nompleggi picked up his second victory on the season. He gave up one run on five hits and struck out seven in the contest.

In the second contest, UW-Oshkosh (11-14-1, 4-6 WIAC) jumped on the board quickly in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) scored the first run for the Warhawks on a fielder's choice ground ball by Aldridge. In the third inning a sacrifice fly by sophomore Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) scored Bryden and gave the Warhawks a 2-1 lead.

The Titans scored four runs on three hits in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. UW-Oshkosh added two insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Starting pitcher junior Ankur Shah (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched five and a half innings, giving up 3 earned runs on the day and dropping to 3-1 on the year. Sophomore Heath Renz (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) and senior Connor Hurst (Waunakee/Waunakee) saw action in relief spots.

The Warhawks continue play tomorrow against UW-Oshkosh. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 12 p.m.
