Women’s Tennis Takes Two on Spring Opening Date

The No. 26 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team dropped a total of two sets in two matches Saturday in 9-0 victories over Wartburg (Iowa) and Augustana (Ill.) at Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
 
The Warhawks improved to 13-0 overall, while Wartburg dropped to 6-11 and Augustana, the Central Region's No. 15 team according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association moved to 15-4.
 
Against Wartburg, the Warhawks claimed all three doubles matches. Sophomore Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) were first on the board with an 8-0 win at No. 3, followed by sophomores Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central), who posted an 8-1 triumph at No. 2.
 
Junior Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and sophomore Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) made it a three-point lead with an 8-2 victory at the top spot.
 
Kitchell and Talyansky registered straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Junior Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) tallied a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 to increase the UW-Whitewater lead to 6-0.
 
Beck and sophomore Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) recorded identical 6-0, 6-0 victories at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively. Senior Ashley Miller (Racine/Union Grove) capped Warhawk scoring with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the fourth position.
 
Against Augustana, Humphreys and McGuire teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Ali MacDonald and Dana Goggin, the region's seventh-ranked duo.
 
Beck and sophomore Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) added an 8-3 victory at No. 2, and Talyansky and Kitchell posted an 8-4 win at the third slot.
 
At No. 2 singles, Kitchell collected a 6-3, 6-1 triumph, and was followed by McGuire, who clinched the match for UW-Whitewater with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3.
 
Humphreys (No. 1) tallied a 7-5, 6-1 win, and Beck added a 6-2, 6-2 triumph from the sixth position.
 
Talyansky (No. 4) and Wallace (No. 5) each fell in their first sets before winning the second and claiming the third on a super tiebreaker.
 
The Warhawks begin their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., next Sunday, March 20, against Allegheny (Pa.).
