The No. 26 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team split a pair of matches against nationally ranked opponents Saturday at XS Tennis Center in Chicago.
The Warhawks (2-3 overall) opened the day with a 6-3 triumph over 10th-ranked Kenyon (Ohio), taking two of three doubles matches and four of six singles contests.
UW-Whitewater was downed 8-1 against sixth-ranked Chicago later in the day.
Against Kenyon (1-2), juniors
Scott Butler (Eagan, MN/Eagan) and
Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman (Chennai, Tamil Nadu-India/SAIDS British Education) put the Warhawks on the board with an 8-4 victory at the second position. Senior
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) and sophomore
Grant Thompson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) combined for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to give the team a 2-0 lead.
Seniors
Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) were edged 9-7 at the top doubles slot by the Lords' Sam Geier and Tristan Kaye.
Thompson earned UW-Whitewater's next point, posting a 7-6 (2), 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles to break a 2-2 tie. Sophomore
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) put the Warhawks ahead 4-3 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
After dropping his first set, Treis clinched the match for UW-Whitewater with a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 win at the second singles slot.
Senior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) tacked on a point with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) triumph at the sixth position.
Against Chicago (5-0), Humphreys and Butler paired up for the team's lone point of the night, an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Warhawks return to action next Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich. They take on Kalamazoo at 9 a.m. Central Time and Hope (Mich.) at 3 p.m. Central Time.
