The Warhawks (4-3) edged Kalamazoo 5-4 to open the day before downing Hope by an 8-1 count.
Against Kalamazoo (2-1), the Warhawks took two of three doubles matches and three of six in singles, including a match-clinching 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the No. 5 position by sophomore
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School).
Juniors
Scott Butler (Eagan, MN/Eagan) and
Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman (Chennai, Tamil Nadu-India/SAIDS British Education) paired up at the second doubles spot to post UW-Whitewater's first point of the match in an 8-2 victory.
Seniors
Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central), the nation's No. 7 ranked doubles pair by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, dug out of a 5-3 deficit to earn a 9-7 win at the No. 1 slot and give the Warhawks a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
Raman tallied UW-Whitewater's first point in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 3. Treis rebounded down a set to win by a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 2 to set up Navratil's clincher.
In the contest against Hope (0-3), the Warhawks took an early 2-0 doubles lead thanks to victories by freshmen
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East), who posted an 8-1 triumph at No. 3, and Butler and Raman, who registered an 8-3 win at No. 1.
Senior
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) and freshman
Grant Thompson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at the second position.
After Raman finished a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, senior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the third slot.
Navratil (No. 2), Calabria (No. 6) and sophomore
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East), who was competing at No. 5 singles, each posted straight-set wins to account for the final margin.
The Warhawks return to action next Friday and Saturday at the four-team Warhawk Invite at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
