The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team held advantages in nearly every statistical category Saturday night, but was defeated 2-1 at Augustana in a match for the Viking-Warhawk Cup at Rock Island, Ill.
The Warhawks (6-3-2 overall) outshot the Vikings 21-8, including a 10-4 margin in shots on goal. UW-Whitewater also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Junior forward
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) tallied a goal on a header in the 20th minute, good for his sixth of the year, to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder
Alex Whiteman (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was credited with his second assist of the year on the play.
UW-Whitewater continued to press the defense of Augustana (4-5-1), putting four more shots on goal over the last 25 minutes of the first half and holding a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
The Warhawks posted a shot on goal and a corner kick in the first five-plus minutes of the second half, but the Vikings leveled the match in the 59th minute.
Augustana took the lead for good in the 80th minute.
UW-Whitewater registered four more shots, including one on goal, and one corner kick over the final 10 minutes, but was held without a goal during that span.
Junior goalkeeper
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made two saves in the loss to drop to 6-3-2 for the season.
The Warhawks continue action Monday at Simpson for a 7 p.m. match in Indianola, Iowa.
