Related Links:Elmhurst Invitational Web Page The No. 24 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team played a pair of decisively different types of matches Saturday, but the results were precisely the same as the team picked up two wins on the second day of the Elmhurst (Ill.) Invitational.
The Warhawks (4-0 overall) finished the season-opening weekend unbeaten after clawing back from a 2-sets-to-1 deficit to defeat UMass Boston 25-27, 25-21, 21-25, 28-26, 15-8 in their first match and cruising to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-12 triumph over Hendrix (Ark.), which received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Preseason Poll.
Following tournament play, junior setter
Staci Hasler (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) and junior outside hitter
Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) were named to the All-Tournament team. Pfeifer led the offense with 53 kills (3.53 per set) and hit .331 for the weekend, while Hasler racked up 123 assists (8.79 per set) and 27 digs.
UW-Whitewater lost the first and third sets against UMass Boston (0-4) before evening the set at 2-2 in the fourth. Sophomore right side
Sydney Racky (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) posted kills on four of the team's final five points to help push the match to a fifth and final set.
In the fifth, the Warhawks jumped out to a 5-1 advantage on the strength of three kills by Pfeifer and didn't look back, completing the comeback on a kill by Racky.
Pfeifer (16 kills) and Racky (14 kills, .500 hitting percentage) led the offense. Pfeifer and junior defensive specialist
Tessa Weber (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) tallied four service aces apiece, and sophomore middle hitter
Courtney Wagner (Dekalb, Ill./Dekalb) recorded a team-high three blocks.
Five players finished in double figures in digs, led by freshman defensive specialist
Brittany Robinson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), who had 15. Hasler finished with 13 digs and a team-best 44 assists. Senior captain
Jaclyn Krizka (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) added 12 digs and five assists.
Against Hendrix (4-2), UW-Whitewater held the Warriors to a minus-.057 hitting percentage, forcing more hitting errors (23) than it allowed in kills (18).
Pfeifer tallied nine kills and a pair of blocks, while freshman middle hitter
Kelley Berk (Cedarburg, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) posted seven kills. Racky added six kills.
Hasler totaled five kills, 25 assists and four digs. Robinson led all defenders with 10 digs, while Weber finished with five service aces and six digs.
The Warhawks visit No. 25 Coe (Iowa) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
