The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater clinched its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship Sunday with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout.
 
The Warhawks (30-7 overall, 18-6 WIAC) claimed the conference title outright, finishing one game ahead of UW-La Crosse in the standings. UW-Whitewater downed the Blue Devils 5-1 in the first game and 14-5 in the nightcap to win its 16th league championship.
 
The Warhawks will host next week's WIAC Championship tournament, which begins Friday at 10 a.m. at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.
 
In the opener, senior left-hander Colin Grove (Beloit/Memorial) pitched the team's third consecutive complete game and his fourth of the year, scattering five hits while striking out four in the effort. He improved to 8-1 for the season.
 
UW-Whitewater tallied twice in the top of the fifth inning and never trailed in the contest. Freshman centerfielder Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) and senior left fielder Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine) contributed run-scoring singles in the frame.
 
After UW-Stout (17-22, 5-19) drew to within one in the bottom of the sixth, the Warhawks responded with two in the top of the eighth. Senior first baseman Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) hit an RBI groundout, and sophomore third baseman Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, IL/Guilford) made it a three-run game with a base hit to left.
 
Cannon added a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
 
In Game 2, UW-Whitewater plated eight runs in the top of the second inning and five more in the top of the sixth, never leading by fewer than four runs in the affair. The Warhawks totaled 16 hits and drew seven walks.
 
Chamberlain registered four hits and two RBIs to lead the offense. Senior second baseman Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, and senior catcher Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) knocked in three runs.
 
Senior shortstop Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) was 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and three RBIs. Power added two hits and two RBIs, while senior right fielder Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
 
Junior righty Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) started on the mound and tossed six innings to remain undefeated at 7-0 for the year. Sophomores John Olejniczak (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso), Austin Finn (Oconomowoc/Kettle Moraine) and senior Andrew Lowe (Whiting, IN/Whiting) recorded scoreless outings in relief.
 
The Warhawks wrap up the regular season Tuesday with a non-conference game against Concordia (Wis.). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
