Related Links:Carthage Box ScoreAugustana Box Score The No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team returned to its winning ways Sunday afternoon, taking matches against Carthage and Augustana (Ill.) at Wangerin Courts in Whitewater.
The Warhawks (11-4 overall) downed the Red Men 8-1 to start the day, then defeated the Vikings 9-0 in the night cap.
All three teams competing Sunday are currently ranked among the top 20 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. UW-Whitewater is seventh, Carthage is 17th and Augustana is No. 19.
In the match against the Red Men (6-5), the Warhawks swept doubles and claimed five of the six singles contests.
Junior captain
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) and sophomore
Martin Beck (Minneapolis/South) started UW-Whitewater off with an 8-3 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Senior captain
Cam Laktash (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and freshman
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) combined to double the team's advantage with an 8-6 win at the second position.
Juniors
Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) closed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at the top slot.
In singles play, Humphreys and Navratil posted identical 6-2, 6-0 results competing at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. Junior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at the sixth spot, while Treis completed a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 2.
Sophomore
Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman (Chennai, Tamil Nadu-India/SAIDS British Education) rounded out Warhawks scoring with a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (11-3) victory at the fourth spot.
Against the Vikings (7-6), UW-Whitewater dropped just one set in the match.
Beck and Schnarr tallied their second win of the day by an 8-3 advantage at No. 3 doubles. Laktash and Raman paired up at the second position and emerged with an 8-6 triumph. Treis and Humphreys made it 3-0 with a 9-8 (7-3) victory.
Bisbee cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, and freshman
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) clinched the match for the Warhawks with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.
Humphreys (No. 1), Treis (No. 2) and Schnarr (No. 4) were all victorious in straight sets. Raman, competing at the third spot, overcame a first-set setback for a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) win.
UW-Whitewater begins its spring break trip Saturday against Stevens Institute of Technology. First serve in Orlando, Fla., is slated for 11 a.m. Central Time.
