The Warhawks (9-3 overall) knocked off NAIA program Cardinal Stritch 6-3 to open the day before sweeping Edgewood 9-0 in the night cap.
Against Cardinal Stritch (6-5), UW-Whitewater, which is also ranked seventh in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started with three wins in doubles and took three of the six singles matches for the final margin.
Sophomores
Scott Butler (Eagan, MN/Eagan) and
Martin Beck (Minneapolis/South) grinded out a tiebreaker at No. 2 for a 9-8 (3) triumph, while sophomore
Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman (Chennai, Tamil Nadu-India/SAIDS British Education) and freshman
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) teamed up for a 9-7 victory at the third position.
Senior captain
Cam Laktash (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and junior
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at the top slot.
Raman and Laktash also earned points in singles. Raman was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 2, while Laktash registered a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the third position.
Junior captain
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) took a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Jimmy Le 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-1) at No. 6 and round out the scoring for the Warhawks.
In the match against Edgewood (1-5), Raman and freshman
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) didn't allow a game in an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Butler and Beck were almost equally as impressive at No. 2, picking up their seventh win of the season by an 8-1 count. Laktash and Schnarr rebounded from a 7-4 deficit to earn a 9-7 triumph at the first position.
Raman (No. 1), Laktash (No. 2), Zurowski (No. 4), Schnarr (No. 5) and Beck (No. 6) were all straight-set winners in singles play. At No. 3, junior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) rebounded from a loss against Cardinal Stritch with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the third spot.
UW-Whitewater returns to competition March 7 at Gustavus Adolphus, which is ranked 14th in the nation and fourth in the Central Region by the ITA. First serve is slated for 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
