Related Links:Ohio Wesleyan Box ScoreWheaton Box Score The No. 25 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team claimed all but two points in a pair of victories Friday on the first day of the Warhawk Invitational at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
The Warhawks (6-3 overall) downed Ohio Wesleyan 8-1 before beating Wheaton (Ill.), the Central Region's 14th-ranked team according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, by an identical score.
Against Ohio Wesleyan (1-4), UW-Whitewater, ranked seventh in the region, earned all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests.
Juniors
Michael Treis (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and
Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while junior captain
Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) and freshman
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) combined for a win by the same score at No. 3.
Senior captain
Cam Laktash (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and sophomore
Martin Beck (Minneapolis/South) registered an 8-4 triumph at the second doubles position.
Treis and Laktash each tallied singles victories in straight sets at the Nos. 1 and 4 slots, respectively. Sophomore
Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman (Chennai, Tamil Nadu-India/SAIDS British Education), freshman
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and junior
Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) were also straight-set winners. Raman, competing at No. 3 singles, took a first-set tiebreaker and didn't drop a game in the second set. Zurowski (No. 5) and Bisbee (No. 6) are now the team's top two in singles victories.
In the match against Wheaton (1-3), Humphreys and Laktash teamed for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles, while Beck and sophomore
Scott Butler (Eagan, MN/Eagan) won by an identical score at No. 3.
At the first position, Treis and senior
Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) finished the Warhawks' doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory.
Treis was dominant in singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the top spot. Shklyar gutted out a second-set tiebreaker for a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory at the second position.
Schnarr and Bisbee were straight-set winners at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Sophomore
Justin Bowman (St Charles, IL/East) recovered from a first-set loss for a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (10-8) triumph at No. 6.
UW-Whitewater concludes play in Janesville Saturday against Grinnell (Iowa). First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
