Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team wrapped up its two-match, three-day trip to Iowa Sunday with a 3-1 setback at Simpson College in a non-conference contest in Indianola, Iowa.
The Warhawks (4-2-1 overall) answered an early goal but were unable to respond to a pair of second-half goals by the Storm. It was the team's first road loss of the season.
UW-Whitewater and Simpson (7-3) each finished with 12 shots and three corner kicks. The Storm held a slight 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
Freshman
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and senior
Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) split goalkeeping duties Sunday. Lucatorto started and posted two saves, while Rohde tallied three saves and was dealt the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year.
After Simpson took a 1-0 lead just under five minutes into the contest, the Warhawks responded quickly in the seventh minute. Senior defender
Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) found the back of the net for his second goal of the year to level the match at 1-1.
UW-Whitewater had a chance to take the lead just two minutes later, but a penalty kick was saved by the Simpson goalkeeper to keep the match tied.
The Warhawks outshot the Storm 7-4 in the first half.
The Storm took the lead for good on a header off a set piece in the 54th minute.
Sophomore
Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) posted a pair of second-half header shots, but one sailed wide and another was saved. He finished with five shots, including two on goal.
The Storm doubled their lead to two goals in the 84th, and UW-Whitewater had two more chances denied.
The Warhawks return from their three-match road swing Wednesday against Carthage. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
