Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team withstood a late push Saturday to defeat the Milwaukee School of Engineering 1-0 in a non-conference contest in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Warhawks (3-1-1 overall), who are unbeaten in their last four matches since a season-opening loss against No. 3 Loras (Iowa), posted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 35th minute and stood strong defensively in the second half to register their second shutout of the year.
Sophomore forward
Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) posted the deciding tally, rebounding a miss and placing a ball in the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Senior midfielder
John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) was credited with the assist, his team-leading third of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) earned his first career win and shutout, and finished with six saves.
The Raiders (4-2) held a 15-13 edge in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half. The two teams were even at 7-7 on corner kicks, with UW-Whitewater totaling five chances from the corner in the first half.
The Warhawks started the match aggressively, recording four corner kicks in the opening 31 minutes. Stanko's marker was the fourth opportunity on goal for UW-Whitewater.
MSOE pursued an equalizer in the second half, but Lucatorto and the Warhawks' back line stood strong, especially in a two-minute stretch midway through the half, when the Raiders posted four shots and two corner kicks.
The Raiders' final chance came on a corner kick in the 86th, but a header shot went high over the crossbar.
UW-Whitewater continues non-conference road play Friday at Central as part of a two-match, three-day trip to Iowa. The contest is slated to begin at 5 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
