Related Links:Box ScoreThe University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team opened its 2014-15 campaign Friday with a 7-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual match at Wangerin Courts in Whitewater, Wis.
The Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) swept all three doubles matches before taking four of six at singles. The Blugolds, who reached the WIAC Tournament semifinals a year ago, fell to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.
UW-Whitewater posted commanding victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions. Sophomores
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Amy Upthagrove (Muskego/Muskego) teamed up at the top spot for an 8-1 triumph. Freshmen
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) opened their careers as Warhawks with an 8-1 victory at the second slot.
Junior captain
Ashley Miller (Racine/Union Grove) and sophomore
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) needed a tiebreak, but outlasted UW-Eau Claire's No. 3 tandem of Sarah Henderson and Colleen McCullough by a 9-8 (3) margin.
Humphreys and Upthagrove carried their momentum into singles play. Humphreys, an All-American a season ago, recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top spot. Upthagrove registered a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 3. Beck took a first set tiebreak en route at a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory at the fifth position.
Freshman
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) tallied her first victory as a Warhawk, 6-2, 6-3, at the fourth spot, to round out UW-Whitewater scoring.
The Warhawks host the eight-team Warhawk Invite tomorrow at Wangerin Courts. Play is slated to begin at 8 a.m. as inclement weather is expected later in the day.
