UW-W Defeats Two Regionally Ranked Teams

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The UW-Whitewater women's tennis team won a pair of matches against two regionally-ranked teams in Rock Island, Ill. on Saturday. The Warhawks began by defeating Coe, 8-1, and followed that with a 9-0 victory over Augustana. The Warhawks are ranked fifth in the Central Division in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll while Coe is 14th and Augustana is 17th.

Results vs. Coe

Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) downed their opponent at first doubles, 8-1, and Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and Amy Upthagrove (Muskego/Muskego) won flight two doubles, 8-1. Erika Williams (Burnsville, MN/Lakeville South) and Jessica Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) wrapped-up doubles action with an 8-5 decision at three doubles.

Entering singles with a 3-0 advantage, Humphreys blanked her opponent at second singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Upthagrove earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at five singles. Bayliss earned a point at number one singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) won 6-1, 6-1, at third singles. Williams finished UW-W's wins in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at four singles.

Results vs. Augustana

The Warhawks continued winning by shutting out host Augustana, 9-0, in their second match of the day.

Bayliss and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) won first doubles, 8-1, for their 13th win of the year to start the match, followed by 8-3 wins by both Upthagrove and Humphreys at second doubles and Jessica Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) and Williams at third doubles.

Bayliss improved to 18-3 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first singles and Humphreys added a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles for her 22nd this season. Hilary Franzen improved to 18-3 with a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-0, at sixth singles and Upthagrove won fifth singles, 6-2, 6-4, for her 11th victory.

Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) was victorious at third singles with a 6-2, 6-3 decision to improve to 11-4. Erika Williams (Burnsville, MN/Lakeville South) eked out a win at fourth singles, dropping the first set 5-7, but battling back to take the second set 7-5, and the final set, 10-5.

The Warhawks, 12-1 on the season and will travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for five matches over spring break. Augustana falls to 15-3 after a 5-4 loss to Coe, and Coe is now 15-3 after splitting with the two teams.

Bayliss is 18-3 at one singles, and Humphreys leads the team with a 22-3 mark. Bayliss and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) are 13-5 at one doubles.
