Warhawk Men Head to Stevens Point for Sectional Play

The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team will travel to Stevens Point, Wis. for NCAA Division III Sectional play Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. The Warhawks (25-4) will face Texas-Dallas (27-3) for the first time in school history in the first game Friday night with tipoff time to be determined. UW-Stevens Point (28-1) will host Emory (18-8) for a chance to advance to the Elite 8 Friday. This is the first time since 2000 that two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams have advanced to the round of 16. UW-W has made it to the Sweet 16 five times, advanced to the Final Four four times and won three national titles in program history.

UW-W's NCAA journey began with a first round game against Northwestern-St. Paul. Reggie Hearn (Milwaukee/Marshall) posted 16 points on 7-14 from the field and Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford) went 7-12 from the floor for 14 points adding seven assists and three steals to lead Whitewater to an 85-79 win over the Eagles. In the second round, the Warhawks topped Augustana 87-68. KJ Evans (Beloit/Beloit Memorial) notched his tenth double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Young added 18 points on 6-8 from the field with three assists and two steals in the contest. 

The Warhawks average 83 points per game in NCAA tournament games this season shooting 54% from the floor, 43.8% from three-point range and 76.9% from the free throw line. UW-W has out-rebounded their opponents 77-47 in the two NCAA games last weekend. The starting five for Whitewater average 62 points and are on the court over 28 minutes per game in the postseason. Defensively, the Warhawks have held their opponents to 41% from the floor and 61.5 points per game. 

Evans leads Whitewater in tournament play with 36 points (18 per game) on 11-22 from the field adding 22 rebounds in two games. Young is 13-20 from the floor averaging 16 points, five assists and 2.5 steals per game. Hearn adds 13.5 points and 8.5 boards in NCAA play. Four of UW-W's starting five average double figures this season led by Evans' 16.2 and 8.4 rebounds. Young orchestrates the offense with over 100 assists this season and an assist-turnover ratio of 2.8.

Whitewater finished second in the WIAC with a 13-3 record and were the league's tournament runner-up after a loss to top-ranked UW-SP in the final, 74-57. UW-W earned an at-large bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament for the program's 19th appearance and seventh under head coach Pat Miller. The Warhawks are 15-0 at home, 8-4 away and 2-0 at neutral sites this season.

UW-W's Sweet 16 opponent, Texas-Dallas won the American Southwest Conference to punch their ticket into the NCAA DIII Tournament. The Comets also rely heavily on their starting five with each seeing almost 30 minutes of court time per game. Four of the five starters average double figures with the group combining for 64.8 points per game this season. Senior forward Kyle Schleigh, the ASC player of the year, leads the Comets with 17.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. Junior guard Matthew Medell adds 15.2 per game to the team total and Dmitriy Chernikov, a senior forward, posts 11.2 per game. Junior guard Nolan Harvey was the hero for UT-Dallas in their second round game with an overtime buzzer-beater from the top of the key to propel the Comets past Whitworth, 78-77.
