Defense Propels Warhawks Past Superior

Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team went on the road to defeat UW-Superior, 77-44, Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
 
The UW-W defense held Superior to 34.8% (16-46) from the field and caused 19 turnovers. Whitewater's offense capitalized on the turnovers, scoring 24 points on their following possessions.  
 
On the offensive side of the ball, Eric Bryson (Elkhorn/Elkhorn) led all scorers with 18 points, going 6-7 from the field and 5-6 behind the arc. KJ Evans (Beloit/Beloit Memorial) racked-up 16 points and seven rebounds for the Warhawks. Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford) assisted on nine baskets and Reggie Hearn (Milwaukee/Marshall) and Cody Odegaard (Poynette/Poynette) cleaned up on the glass with a combined 15 rebounds. As a team, UW-W shot 45.3% (19-64) from the field and 55.6% (10-18) from long range.
 
The Warhawks came out on fire, scoring 17 of the first 20 points in the first eight minutes of play. Bryson was 5-5 from behind the arc and UW-W was 7-13 from the field to grab an early 17-3 lead. The Warhawks kept the pressure on extending their lead out to 26 to go into the half with a 45-19 lead.
 
At the end of the first half, Whitewater was 16-33 (48.5%) from the field and 9-11 from downtown. Bryson scored 17 points in the twenty minutes, going 5-6 from behind the arc, while Young had seven assists and Evans gathered five boards.
 
The Yellowjackets cut their deficit to 22 points, 47-25, to open the second half but the Warhawks extended the lead out to 33 when they went on a 15-2 run that was capped by a Steve Egan (Omro/Omro) layup at the 12:42 mark.
 
The advantage hovered around 30 points for UW-W throughout the remainder of the game as the Warhawks shot 41.9% from the floor in the second half and 5-8 from the charity stripe. UW-Superior shot just 9-24 (37.5%) from the floor in the second half and was 0-4 from behind the arc.
 
The Warhawks improve to 19-3 on the year and 10-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Yellowjackets fall to 6-15 and 3-9 in the WIAC. UW-W is second in the conference standings and UW-S is seventh coming down the stretch.
 
UW-Whitewater will return to Kachel Gym for its next contest, as it hosts UW-La Crosse Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm.
