Rep. Jorgensen Honors UW-Whitewater Football Team at State Capitol with Assembly Joint Resolution 84
MADISON – State Representative Andy Jorgensen (D-Milton) today welcomed UW-Whitewater student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, including Interim Chancellor Beverly Kopper, to the Capitol, honoring the Warhawks' win of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Football National Championship title.
"The Warhawks have won five of the last seven NCAA Division III football championships – a truly incredible feat that illustrates their commitment to excellence," said Jorgensen. "They've brought great distinction on the City of Whitewater and the State of Wisconsin, and deserve to be commended in this special way."
Jorgensen authored AJR 84 along with State Senator Tim Cullen (D-Janesville), and garnered the support of many lawmakers, Democratic and Republican alike. The resolution notes the UWW football team's perfect 15-0 season in 2013, which culminated in its 33rd league title in program history and a 52-14 victory over Mount Union in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the Division III title.
In a speech to the Assembly body, Jorgensen recognized the team's dedicated coaching staff, including head coach
Lance Leipold, who was named D3football.com's Coach of the Year and also the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year, assistant head coach and defensive coordinator
Brian Borland, and offensive coordinator
Andy Kotelnicki. The Milton lawmaker also noted the contributions of senior members of the team: linebacker
Cole Klotz (Elm Grove /New Berlin Eisenhower), who was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and
Tyler Huber (North Prairie/Mukwonago),
Zach Howard (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park River Forest),
Josh Williams (Milwaukee/Mukwonago),
Steve Morris (Racine /Horlick),
Andrew Keister (Evansville/Evansville),
Eric Kindler (Germantown/Germantown),
Bryan Spakowicz (Pewaukee/Pewaukee),
Kyle Wismer (Spring Grove, IL/Richmond-Burton Community),
Ryan Cortez (Palatine, IL/Palatine),
Joe Paulus (Fredonia/Kewaskum),
Marshall Rutherford (Waterford/Waterford-Union), and
Loussaint Minett (Whitewater/Whitewater).
"Some of these student-athletes may go on to pursue a career in professional football, but more of them will go on to the work-a-day world. I know that the understanding of teamwork and persistence they learned as Warhawks will serve them well, and so will the world-class education they received at UW-Whitewater," said Jorgensen. "These young people have bright futures, and I'm excited to see where life takes them next."
AJR 84 honoring the UW-Whitewater team was approved on a unanimous voice vote.
