Earlier this season the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team traveled to UW-Superior and came home with a 3-3 double-overtime tie. Wednesday, when these two teams face-off in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal match at 6 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, there will be a winner. The Warhawks (12-3-4) will face UW-Superior (9-9-1) in a rematch of last year's WIAC semifinal where the Yellowjackets upset the host school 2-1 and went on to capture their first WIAC title.
UW-Whitewater finished the regular season with a 2-0-2 record in the WIAC, thus earning the number two seed in the WIAC tournament. The Yellowjackets, the three seed, finished league play 2-1-1. This is the second year that the WIAC will use a tournament format to determine the WIAC champion.
The Warhawks are led by senior captains
John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) and
Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West). Gottwald leads the team in points (25), goals (7) and assists (11). Rohde gives up, on average, less than one goal per game while saving 81.8% of the shots he faces. The Warhawks are currently on an eleven game unbeaten streak with a record of 8-0-3 dating back to a September 24th loss to Carthage.
Gio Rodriguez leads the Yellowjackets in points (25), goals (10) and assists (5) while teammate Brian Grand is tied for first on the team in assists and has scored three game-winning goals. Superior has lost their last four games in a row.
UW-Whitewater is 6-2-2 at home this year, outscoring their opponents 16-10. When away from home, the Yellowjackets are 7-5-0 and have outscored their opponents 21-15.
The winner advances to play the winner of a semifinal game between UW-Oshkosh, the top seed, and UW-Platteville, the fourth seed. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game on Friday at 6 pm. The Warhawks have won the WIAC title in three of the previous five seasons.
