The UW-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Carroll University at the Williams Center pool on Friday night. The women defeated Carroll, 147-92, while the men took their meet, 135.5-90.5

UW-W dominated the distance events with
Taylor Schaeffer (Madison/Madison Memorial) winning both the 1,000 freestyle (11:14.31) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.78) while
Derek Scheible (Sheboygan/Sheboygan South) did the same, swimming a 10:50.78 in the 1,000 and a 5:14.63 in the 500.
Jaime Kohnke (Milwaukee/Riverside) won the 200 free (2:01.99), finishing nearly five seconds ahead of her nearest competitor,
Marta Burwell (Oxford, MS/Oxford ) (2:06.56). For the men,
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) and
Bradley Wilson (Brookfield/Milwaukee Lutheran) finished 1-2, with times of 1:53.16 and 2:01.41, respectively.
Katie Hausmann (New Berlin/New Berlin West) won the 50 free in a season best time of 25.79 and
James Rodney (Barrington, IL/Barrington) took the top spot for the men, with a 23.26.
McKenzie Asplund (Cedar Rapids, IA/Xavier ) won the 200 IM (2:20.87) while
Austin Mrkvicka (Lockport, IL/Lockport) (2:14.95) and
Alex Mikolajewski (Palatine, IL/William Fremd High School) (2:15.23) were second and third for the men.
Sierra Becker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) was the top performer for the women in the dive well, taking 1 meter diving with an NCAA qualifying score of 278.78 and 3 meter diving with a score of 259.35. For the men, freshman
Theo Vergis (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) won the 3 meter diving (265.05) and was second in the 1 meter (244.35) while fellow freshman
Glen Brinkman (Kenosha/Bradford) won the 1 meter competition (1276.37) and was runner-up in the 3 meter (164.15).
Freshman
Gabriela Swider (Milwaukee/St Thomas More) won the 100 fly (1:01.58) and junior
Brooke Flesher (St. Charles, IL/St Charles East) was third (1:03.14) for the women's squad. Burwell won the 100 free in a time of 58.06 and
Ray Polgar (Port Washington/Port Washington) (51.53) and
Jared Gruenwald (Milwaukee/Riverside) (52.64) went took the first two spots in the men's race.
The UW-W women's 200 free relay of
Kaitlyn Brooks (Grafton/Grafton), Flesher, Burwell and
Willow Becher (Rochester, MN/Home Schooled) ended the meet with a first place finish in a time of 1:45.68 and the men's team of
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska), Mikolajewski, Polgar and Rodney swam a 1:32.96, good for first place.
UW-Whitewater will continue with the second day of competition in the Phoenix 1-2-3 at UW-Green Bay Saturday.
