Warhawks Complete Comeback to Win Inaugural Shaymus Guinn Cup

Box Score The first ever Shaymus Guinn Cup will be a memorable match for the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team.  The Warhawks scored with one second left in the game to complete a remarkable comeback and defeat UW-Platteville 3-2 and win the Cup in Platteville on Sunday.  UW-W improves to 9-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Pioneers fall to 5-4-3 and 1-2-0 in the WIAC.

The Warhawks fell behind 2-0 after forty-one minutes of play.  This marks just the second time all season that the Warhawks have given up more than one goal in a game.

Eduardo Gutierrez got UW-W on the board just before the half when he knocked in a loose ball in the box that the Pioneers failed to clear.  The goal was the first of the season for Gutierrez.

The scored remained 2-1 for most of the second half and with less than five minutes remaining the Warhawks still trailed, but at 86:13 Austin Saari (River Falls/River Falls) found Bob Shone (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) for the equalizer.  UW-W could have been content with forcing the tie and overtime, but they weren't done yet.

John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took a corner as the last few seconds ticked down and with one second left on the clock Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) headed in the game winner.

The win snapped a two game losing streak for UW-W and clinched the first ever win of the Shaymus Guinn Cup.  The Shaymus Guinn Cup was created in honor of head coach Tony Guinn's son Shaymus who lost his battle with cancer last December. Last November Shaymus was named an honorary Warhawk student-athlete for his interest in, and support of, UW-Whitewater athletics.  UW-Platteville was chosen as the annual opponent in search of the Shaymus Guinn Cup because of Coach Guinn's ties with the Pioneer program. Guinn played soccer for UW-Platteville from 1985-1987.

The Warhawks will travel to Fond du Lac on October 8 for a game against Marian at 7 pm.
