Grant Sutter (Dodgeville/Dodgeville) and
Reid Dickerson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) captured titles for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the
Blugold Open Saturday in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Sutter, who picked up a victory in Whitewater's win over UW-Stevens Point Friday, pinned Tom Foy of Wheaton College in the 125 pound semifinals, then defeated Mike Fuenffinger of Augsburg 8-4 in the class title bout. Sutter is 7-0 this season, with three pins among his seven wins.
Dickerson could be excused if he confused his surroundings Saturday with the Warhawk wrestling room. The UW-W senior opened with a 6-4 win over Eric Twohey of UW-La Crosse to advance to face teammate
Adam Zeh (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East), who defeated Jacob Hoffstatter of UW-Eau Claire 9-1 in his first match, in a 174 semifinal. Dickerson beat Zeh 10-5 to advance to the title match. Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the bracket, UW-W's
Ryan Aprahamian (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) advanced to the title match with an 11-3 win over Jay Howarth of UW-Oshkosh and a 7-2 win over Tyler Kennedy of UW-Eau Claire. Dickerson topped Aprahamian 9-6 for the 174 championship, upping his season mark to 19-16. With first and second place in hand, Zeh came back on the consolation side with a 12-10 win over Howarth and a pin in 1:47 of Twohey to capture third place --- giving UW-W 1-2-3 in the 174 pound weight class.
A similar situation occurred at 157 pounds.
Kegan Arthur (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) defeated Brandon Stradel of Eau Claire 10-3 in a quarterfinal and LaQuan Lunford of UW-Parkside 4-0 in a semifinal bout. Dillon Bera of Parkside beat Arthur 3-0 in the 157 championship. Bera got to the finals by beating Whitewater's
Corey Schmidt (Homewood, IL/Homewood Flossmoor) in a semifinal, 12-4. Schmidt opened his day with a 9-4 win over Hinze Jordan of UW-Oshkosh and followed with an 8-6 win in overtime over Scott Hogan of UW-La Crosse to advance to the match with Bera. Schmidt came back from his semifinal loss with a technical fall, 18-1, over Lunford in the match for third place. Whitewater's
Jordan Sowinski (Muskego/Muskego) lost to Bera in the first round, but came back with an 8-4 win over Hogan in the consolation bracket, and added a pin in 1:45 over Isaac Bray of Wheaton in the match for fifth place. Arthur is 14-9 this season, Schmidt 17-14, and Sowinski 11-7.
Whitewater's
Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East), 17-12 overall, took second place at 133 pounds. Pruett pinned Dan Beane of UW-La Crosse in 1:02, then pinned Carl DeLuca of UW-Oshkosh in 1:03, before an 8-7 loss in the championship match to Tom Kuehn of Augsburg College.
Brian Lewis (Verona/Verona), wrestling at 149, won more matches than any Warhawk in the tournament, going 4-1 at 149 pounds. Lewis defeated Thomas Dahlke of UW-Oshkosh 7-3 in the first round and then lost to Mike Migawa of Parkside 12-3 in the second. Lewis came back with a 5:29 pin of Nick Dahlquist of Augsburg in the consolation round, and followed that with a 16-5 win over Scot McCullough of Oshkosh in his next match. He won his third in a row in the fifth place bout, pinning Matthew Cordell of Wheaton in 3:35, evening his season mark at 13-13.
As an open meet, the Blugold Open did not compile team scores.
UW-W, ranked ninth in the
National Wrestling Coaches Association adidas/Brute Division III poll, will host UW-Parkside Thursday, February 9 at 7:00 in Williams Center. The match against the Division II Rangers is the annual battle for the Sake Bottle, a series that started with former Warhawk coach Willie Myers and former UW-P head coach Jim Koch.
