Day Two
On the strength of a pair of champions and two weight class runner-ups, ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater finished second in the field of thirty-one teams at the
Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois Friday and Saturday. The field included two NCAA Division II teams and ten teams ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll.
This tourney was big, both in quantity and quality. UW-Whitewater totaled 102 points, finishing behind Division II UW-Parkside's 117.5. After Parkside and Whitewater, in order came the University of Mount Union 92.5, University of Indianapolis 91.5, and Olivet College rounded out the top five with 88 points. Mount Union is sixth in the Division III poll, Indianapolis is a Division II school, number seven in D3 is Olivet, twelfth-ranked Ohio Northern finished sixth, seventeenth-ranked UW-Oshkosh tied for seventh with #24 Messiah College, Elizabethtown College is ranked twenty-first and finished tied for twelfth at Wheaton, third-ranked UW-La Crosse tied for fourteenth, and number twenty-six Wabash College placed seventeenth in the tourney.

Cade Sarbacker (Mineral Point/Iowa-Grant), a defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, won the 149 weight class and
Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) took the title at 165. Sarbacker went 5-0 in the tourney. His wins included a 4-2 decision over Jake Strausbaugh of Wabash, ranked fifth in the NWCA ratings; and a 17-6 win over eighth-ranked Greg Pederson of Olivet. Sarbacker defeated Alberto Quiros of Augustana College 1-0 in the title match. Gibson also went 5-0 over the two days, improving to 27-9. Gibson piled up 48 points (match, not team) in the first four rounds (15-1, 12-4, 13-8, 8-2), including a win over UW-Parkside's Montrail Johnson. Gibson beat Quint Eno of Elizabethtown 5-2 in the final.
Whitewater also earned big points from
Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) at 197 and
Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) at 285, both finishing second. Latella won by pin, by a decision, and defeated #8 Zach Strickland of UW-La Crosse 5-3 in the semis. Latella lost to William Meaney of Elizabethtown 5-3 in his championship match. Latella is 11-3 this season. Anderson, ranked third by the NWCA, pinned his opponents in the first two rounds, then won 13-5 and in the semifinals and by a medical forfeit to lead up to his title bout. The championship match showcased two of the best in Division III, with Mount Union's Derrick Hesson, ranked second, topping Anderson, ranked third, 7-2. Anderson, 30-3, is the only Warhawk this season with thirty wins.
Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall) wasn't involved in a championship match at 141, but his 2-3 mark contributed valuable team points with his eighth place finish.
UW-W will travel to Stevens Point to take on the Pointers Friday, February 3. The Warhawks have two home matches left on their regular season schedule, hosting UW-Parkside for the Sake Bottle Thursday, February 9 at 7:00, and UW-Platteville Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 for the annual Senior Night.

Sarbacker is the eighth seed at his weight, Latella is the seven seed, and both Gibson and Anderson are seeded second in the Willson tourney.
UW-W has 67 points, with the University of Mount Union second at 67.5 and UW-Parkside, a Division II school, leading the standings with 79 points.
