Warhawk Women Win Rocky Rococo Title

Led by Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker)' record-breaking performance, UW-Whitewater won the Rocky Rococo Invitational on the Converse Track in Kachel Fieldhouse in Whitewater Saturday.

Team scores were:  UW-Whitewater 170.5, Clarke University 95.5, Judson University 84, Ripon College 67, University of Dubuque 58.5, Beloit College 41, Milwaukee School of Engineering 34, Concordia (WI) University 30, Greater Milwaukee Track Club 30, Aurora University 27, and Edgewood College 24.5.

Demos, a junior, won the high jump competition with a height of 5-10.75.  The mark is the UW-W indoor record, as well as the Kachel Fieldhouse facility record.  It also meets the automatic qualification standard for the NCAA III indoor championship in March.  Demos added to her day's work with a win in the 60 meter hurdles at 9.32.

Shelby Mahr (Boyd/Stanley-Boyd) added first place points in the shot put, 36-11.75, Janna Wise (Verona/Verona) won the mile in 5:38.57, and the 4x400 relay, which was clocked in 4:10.47, also placed first.  Alyssa Duncan (East Troy/East Troy) won the 3000 meters in 10:52.8, and Whitewater's Beth Dreikosen (Sheboygan/North) crossed the line first in the 400, in 1:01.3.

Demos led a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump, with Lauren Strohmaier (Genoa, IL/Kingston) jumping 5-6, and JoLynn Owen taking third at 5-0.25.

Whitewater went 2-3-4-4 in the pole vault.  Loryn Kressin (Greenfield/Wisconsin Lutheran) vaulted 11-0.25 for second place, and she was followed by Melanie Pilon (Waukesha/South) (10-6.25), with UW-W's Ryanne Bell (Boscobel/Boscobel) and Brooke Marriott (Moline, IL/Alleman Catholic) sharing fourth place at 9-6.5.

Jill Hernke (Palmyra/Kettle Moraine) added to the team total with a third place in the weight throw (44-8.75), and Whitewater's Amy Miskowicz (Woodstock, IL/Marion Central Catholic) was fourth at 44-6, with Bethany Neuberger (Denmark/Denmark) earning sixth place with a throw of 43-8.  Hernke also helped the team total with a third place finish in the triple jump at 32-7.5, and Neuberger added to her day with sixth place in the shot put (32-2.5). 

Other top performances for UW-Whitewater included:  Kelsey Jones (Janesville/Parker), fourth in the long jump (16-2.5); Alysha Rendflesh (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee), fourth in the 5000 meters (20:42.18); Lacy Beck (Hebron, IL/Alden-Hebron), sixth in the 60 hurdles (10.48) that Demos won; and Paeton Wantuch (LaPorte, IN/LaPorte), fifth in the mile (5:38.87) behind Wise. Kristin Heitsman finished fourth (8.35) in the 60 meter dash.  Also Simone Koenen (Burlington/Burlington) (1:03.24) and Stephanie Noskowiak (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) (1:03.70), fifth and sixth in the 400 after Dreikosen; and Dana Landem (Batavia, IL/Batavia), tenth in the 800 in 2:47.33.  Jones also contributed points with her fourth place in the 200 (27.15), with Dreikosen adding a fifth place in the same event (27:40). UW-Whitewater finished fourth in the distance medley.

Next up for UW-W is the North Central Triangular Saturday the 28th, and the next home match is the Warhawk Classic, February 4.
