Gibson and Arthur Lead Grapplers at Concordia

Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) and Kegan Arthur (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) led a contingent of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestlers at the Concordia Open in Mequon Saturday. 

Results

Gibson was seeded sixth at 165 and exceeded that with his fourth place finish.  He won his first two matches before losing to the three seed in his weight class, James Layton of the University of Chicago. Gibson moved to the wrestleback bracket where he won two more matches, and found himself facing matched up with Layton again in the match for third place, losing 6-0. 

Arthur placed seventh in the 157 pound class.  Although unseeded, Arthur had a first round bye, then won his next match.  He lost to the number four seed to drop down to the wrestleback bracket where he won by fall -- twice, and won by a disqualification.  He dropped a decision to set up match for seventh place, where defeated Rob Maertz of UW-Platteville 5-3.

Other Warhawk wrestlers, with their record in the tourney, included:  Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East), 2-2 at 133; Chris Burnett, 1-2 at 149; Tyler Becker (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) 3-2 at 165 (one of the losses to his teammate, Gibson); and Spencer George (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East), 1-2 at 285.

There were no team scores kept in the meet.

UW-W, which competed as a split squad Saturday with another contingent traveling to Olivet, Michigan for the Comet Duals.  UW-W will compete again as a split squad in the next outing, a group heading to Kenosha for the Wisconsin Open and another to Indianapolis, Indiana for the Little States Tournament.
