Defense Keys Win over Dominican

Box Score UW-Whitewater held Dominican University to 32% shooting in the Warhawks 71-44 win in Geiseman Gymnasium in River Forest, Illinois Saturday.

Dominican led 8-6 with 16:01 left in the first half, and that was the last time UW-W was looking up on the scoreboard.  The remainder of the first half was taken up by Warhawks runs.  From that 8-6 point, UW-W scored eleven of the next fifteen points for a 17-12 at 11:42.  Whitewater closed the half on a 12-4 run, with senior center Chris Davis (Madison/East) scoring all of those points for UW-W for a 31-21 halftime lead.

Whitewater scored 22 points in the paint in the first half, to eight for Dominican, and held the Stars to 31% from the field.

UW-W must have been running downhill in the second, as they opened with an 11-0 run, within a 17-8 run, which was within a 29-10 run.  UW-W led 60-31 with 8:07 left in the game.  Whitewater built 31 point leads twice, 64-33 and 67-36, before the final buzzer.

Whitewater shot 58% for the game and limited the Stars to 32%.  There were only 18 free throws taken in the game, with UW-W hitting 8-9 and DU 4-9.  Whitewater out-rebounded Dominican 37-23, with 32 boards on the defensive end.

Davis led all scorers with 20 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists.  Freshman center Justin Scanlan (Plainfield, IL/) scored ten points, and freshman guard Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford) tied for the team lead with seven boards.  Senior guard Darius Nelson led DU with 13 points, and sophomore forward Logan Harris led both teams with eight rebounds.

UW-W will travel to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College Tuesday evening.  The next home game will be November 30 at 7:00, with Illinois Wesleyan University visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
