UW-Whitewater had to come from behind after an early goal by UW-Platteville to win 2-1 Wednesday in Platteville. The win ensures that UW-W claims at least a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, their third in three years. One more conference victory and the Warhawks will clinch the title outright. The Warhawks remain undefeated in the WIAC at 6-0-0 and improve to 10-6-0 overall. The Pioneers fall to 8-9-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the WIAC.
Pioneer senior midfielder Brandon Chmiel headed in a goal at the 8:30 mark of the first half to give Platteville an early 1-0 lead. The goal was scored on the first shot of the game for either team.
The Warhawks and Pioneers each fired off two more shots throughout the rest of the first half, but UW-P held on to the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Kevin Kron (Willowbrook, IL/Benet Academy), UW-W's leading scorer, knotted the game at one 12:17 into the second half off of a pass from Kurt Knolle. The goal is the eighth of the season for Kron. Just 4:32 later
Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer/Brown Deer) gave the Warhawks the lead for good on an unassisted goal.
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) went on to preserve the Warhawk victory stopping three Platteville shots in the second half and making a total of four saves in the game. Mikesell earned the victory in net and pulls even to 2-2 for the season as goalkeeper.
The Pioneers outshot the Warhawks 9-7 and were whistled for offsides six times to Whitewater's three. UW-P also recorded more fouls, 15, than Whitewater, 7.
Since a 0-4 start to their season the Warhawks have gone 10-2 in their last twelve games. They will travel to the University of Chicago on October 23 for their next game starting at 1:00 pm.
