Warhawks Pound Finlandia, Continue to Roll

Box Score

Four goals in each half gave the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team an 8-0 victory over Finlandia University Wednesday in Hancock, Michigan.  UW-W improves to 8-5-0 overall, 4-0-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and have won eight out of their last nine games.  Finlandia, the lone representative from Michigan in the WIAC, falls to 2-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the WIAC.

The Warhawks dominated the entire 90 minutes ripping 36 shots to the Lions' 2.  In the first half UW-W peppered the Finlandia goalkeeper with 17 of those shots.  The first one to breakthrough and score was Austin Saari (River Falls/River Falls) in the twelfth minute off of a pass from Jonathon Fischer (Hartland/Arrowhead).

Fischer took over and scored the next two goals for UW-W, one at 22:00 and the next just 24 seconds later, to give the Warhawks a three goal advantage.  Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) assisted both of Fischer's goals.

It seemed there was a pattern developing as Fye scored the next goal after assisting the previous one, just as Fischer did.  Fye scored in the 42nd minute on an Edward Horrocks (Milton Keynes, England/Ousedale) assist.

Holding a 4-0 advantage to start the second half UW-W continued to keep the pressure on Finlandia with 19 second half shots.  Horrocks, who assisted the previous goal, scored the fifth goal of the game in the 54th minute.  Kurt Knolle recorded his first point of the season with the assist.

Yves Dietrich (Floeha, Germany/Clemens Winkler Gymnasium) broke the pattern of players to record an assist and then a goal by scoring in the 70th minute to give UW-W a 6-0 lead.  Horrocks chipped in the assist for Dietrich.

Kyle Sundby (Verona/Verona), playing in just his fifth game this season, scored the only unassisted goal of the game in the 87th minute, and Dietrich found Horrocks for the final goal of the game in the 89th minute.

Horrocks was the leading point scorer for UW-W finishing the game with six, two goals and two assists.  Horrocks, a late addition to the squad, now has three goals and three assists in just six games.

Aaron Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) and Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) combined to earn the shutout, and only Mikesell had to make a save.  The shutout is the second consecutive for UW-W and their fifth of the season.  All five shutouts have come in the last seven games.

The Warhawks improve to 4-0-0 against Finlandia in school history and have outscored the Lions 43-1 in those four matches.

Chapman University is up next for the Warhawks.  The game is set for October 14 at 5:00 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.  The two teams have met only once before with Chapman earning a 1-0 victory.
