Warhawks 3-1-1 at Whitehill

UW-Whitewater, ranked twenty-sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, went 3-1-1 to finish seventh in the sixteen team field at the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania Friday-Saturday, January 14-15. The Warhawks, 9-10-1 overall and 9-8-1 against fellow non-scholarship teams, faced three nationally ranked opponents in the tourney.  Warhawk sophomore Jake Fredrickson remained undefeated at 133 pounds, his five wins improving his season mark to 9-0, and 285-pounder James Zarate (Waukesha/North) also won five times to improve to 13-9.  Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), 4-1 in the tourney and ranked seventh at 197 pounds, improved to 18-3.

The Warhawks, ranked twenty-sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, opened day two of competition, Saturday, at the Budd Whitehill duals with a 27-18 win over twenty-first ranked Springfield College.  Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), ranked seventh in the 197 pound weight class, improved to 18-3 with a win.  Warhawk 133-pounder Jake Fredrickson (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), a 10-4 winner, remains unbeaten at 7-0.

UW-W hooked up with #28 Wabash College in the second match Saturday.  The match ended in a 19-19 tie, which will be the official result for both schools. However, to determine which team would be considered the "winner" for advancement in the bracket, Wabash will advance on the basis of tie-breaking criteria -- and it took until the eighth factor, number of takedowns in the match, 15-13 in favor of Wabash, to determine advancement.

The Warhawks won the seventh place match 21-17 over the State University of New York-Oswego.  SUNY-Oswego 174-pounder Cameron Mills, ranked ninth, won his match over Whitewater's Reid Dickerson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central), but a 6-4 edge in matches won, and an offsetting pin by Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) at 197 pounds, helped UW-W earn the narrow victory.

The Warhawks entered the tournament as the sixth seed and opened competition Friday with a 31-12 win over Rhode Island College.  Jake Fredrickson, who joined the team for the second semester, upped his record to 5-0 with a 10-2 win over Travis Drappi, a senior who came in to the match ranked tenth at 133 pounds in the Brute/adidas Division III weight class ratings.

Whitewater fell 21-19 to sixteenth ranked SUNY-Cortland in their second match Friday.  Two nationally ranked wrestlers met at 197 pounds, with Cortland sophomore Jared Myhrberg, ranked fifth, edging Whitewater's Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), ranked seventh, 7-5.  It was just Latella's third loss of the season, against seventeen wins, and it broke a modest four match win streak for Latella.  At 141 pounds, Cortland's Aljamain Sterling, ranked fourth, narrowly defeated Warhawk sophomore Brian Lewis (Verona/Verona), 3-2.  Whitewater's James Zarate (Waukesha/North), 12-9, received a forfeit at 285, missing a match with Cortland's Corey James, ranked eighth.
