Former UW-W wide receiver Derek Stanley has signed a contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
Stanley played for UW-Whitewater from 2003-2006, helping the Warhawks advance to the NCAA Division III championship game his last two years. He earned all-America honors as a kick returner as a freshman when he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, and repeated as a wide receiver in 2006. He is the school's all-time leader in receiving yards (2,621) and touchdowns receiving (35). He also holds single season marks for yards (1,328 in 2005) and touchdowns (17 in 2006). He also shares the school record with four touchdown receptions in a game (vs. Lakeland College in 2006).
Stanley was drafted in the seventh round by the Saint Louis Rams after the 2006 season, and saw action in fifteen games from 2007-2009.
The Argonauts own the distinction as North America's oldest professional football club, celebrating their 137th anniversary in 2010. The team has won fifteen CFL Grey Cup championships.
