Schmidt literally took down the competition in the 285 weight class with a 2-1 overtime upset decision over undefeated top seed Mark Corsello of Elmhurst College. Schmidt's momentum from the big first round win propelled him to a 7-2 decision over eighth seed, Augsburg's Andrew Witzel (27-10). Day two of the championships has Schmidt facing fifth seed John Helgerson of Wartburg (27-5).

Bautista started the 141 pound competition with a 6-4 first round decision over NYU's Gregg Martino (15-6). A close 2-1 decision in the favor Ithaca's Jeremy Stierly (34-4) recorded Bautista's first loss of the double elimination competition. However, Bautista came back with a 4-3 decision over fifth seed Ben Anderson (28-7) from Concordia, MN. He is now matched up against Ryan Bridge (19-3) wrestling for Stevens Institute of Technology to begin day two.

Latella, wrestling at 197, suffered a quick first round pin in just 1:14 against Wartburg's number five seed Byron Tate (35-7). A second round 8-5 decision over Michael Burke of Wabash (24-7) kept him in the running but sixth seed from Mount Union, Bill Schindel (22-3), cut Latella's tournament short with a 13-4 major decision.

Schmidt and Bautista will move on to the second day of competition in the NCAA Division III championships. Additional information about day two will be posted when provided.
