Women Netters Suffer First Loss of Season, Fall to #6 Gustavus

The Warhawk women's tennis team, champions of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and undefeated in their fall season, split a pair of matches on their opening weekend of spring competition.  UW-W fell to host Gustavus Adolphus College 7-2, and defeated the University of Sioux Falls 9-0 without losing a set, both matches in Saint Peter, Minnesota Saturday.

Gustavus recently finished sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III fall national dual meet championship, making the comebacks of Schaefer and Stensvaag even more noteworthy.  Schaefer was an ITA Division III all-American last season.

The University of Sioux Falls is the Great Plains Athletic Conference title holder, and their number one, Jenny Lewellen was the GPAC Player of the Year and a Division III all-American.

Schaefer improved her number one singles record to 14-2, and Siemon's win over Sioux Falls gave her a team high 19 wins (19-2).  Stensvaag and Smith have combined for a team best 17-3 record at number two doubles.  

UW-W will make its annual trek to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for spring break, playing five matches beginning March 22.  The first home appearance of the spring will be April 17, with matches against Elmhurst College at 9:30 and Edgewood College at 3:30 on the Wangerin Courts south of Williams Center on the UW-W campus.  There is no spectator charge.
