Both Gustavus and Whitewater got off four shots in the first half. At 12:58 GAC's Daniel Jarrett put the ball on net but UW-W's
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) made the save. The tables were turned at 29:47 when
Steve Nashleanas (Brookfield/East) got off a shot that was stopped by Gustie goalie Luke Strom.
Gustavus out-shot Whitewater 6-2 in the second half, but UW-W got the only one that counted. The Gusties already had three shots in the second half when UW-W's
Tim Windler (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) tested Strom at 71:34. Strom stopped that one, but less than two minutes later, at 73:29,
Trevor Swentik (Delafield/Marquette University HS) scored with an assist from
Kevin Grimstad (Hartland/Arrowhead). Swentik's is making his team-leading seventh goals count -- five of them have been game winners.
UW-W wasn't out of the woods with the goal, as Gustavus got off three more shots, including a save by Mikesell at 78:01.
Whitewater, twelfth in the NCAA III statistics for goals against, has racked up nine shutouts in its twelve games. Mikesell raised his keeper record to 7-0 with his fourth shutout.
UW-W is shooting less, but enjoying the same results. The Warhawks six shots tied their season low, equaling the total UW-W managed in a 2-0 win over UW-Platteville Wednesday.
The loss was the first in seven matches, a 5-0-2 streak, for Gustavus. GAC is 7-4-3.
The Warhawk men's soccer team is approaching school records for wins. The longest non-losing (win/tie) streak to start a season came in 2005 when UW-W began the year 13-0-1. The school's all-time record for games without a loss (win/tie) is 16, set in 2007.
UW-W is 3-4-3 all-time versus Gustavus, but 2-0-1 in the last three meetings between the teams.
Whitewater will host North Park College (IL) Tuesday at 7:00 at Bob Fiskum Field. Fiskum Field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center on the UW-W campus. Free parking is adjacent to the soccer/track complex.
