Defense Shuts Down Pioneers, Warhawks Remain Unbeaten

UW-Whitewater, ranked eighth and twelfth in the national Division III soccer polls, remained unbeaten with a 2-0 win at UW-Platteville Wednesday night.

Both defenses were stout in the first half, allowing just two shots each.  Neither of Platteville's reached UW-W goalie Aaron Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy), but Ryan Richgels (Madison/Memorial) scored his first goal of the season on Whitewater's first shot of the game, at 17:52 off an assist from Trevor Swentik (Delafield/Marquette University HS).

Richgels' goal would prove to be all the Warhawks needed as UW-W defenders held the Pioneers to just three more shots in the second half, again, none of them reaching Sesselmann.

Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) added an insurance goal, like Richgels his first of the year, at 70:37 to conclude the scoring.

Whitewater's two goals gave them a high accuracy percentage, given that the Pioneers' defense was also effective, limiting the Warhawks to six shots, four of them on goal.

The Warhawks, 9-0-2 this season and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, have shut out seven opponents this season, including the last three in a row.  UW-W has given up just four goals in 2010.  Sesselmann has accounted for four of the shutouts.  UW-W is twelfth in NCAA III statistics in goals allowed, and Sesselmann is fifteenth among all D3 goalies.

UW-P is is 7-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.

Whitewater will play at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota Sunday.  The next home game for UW-W will be Tuesday, hosting North Park College at 7:00 at Bob Fiskum Field on the UW-W campus.  The field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center.  Free parking is adjacent to the field.
