'Hawks Win Thriller to Advance

They may not have directly kicked the ball into the net, but the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team is moving on to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament after a 1-0 double-overtime victory over St. Olaf on Saturday in River Forest, Illinois.  The Warhawks won via an own goal by St. Olaf who had a defender accidentally knock one in his own goal after 106 minutes of soccer.  For complete information see UW-W's Tournament Central site

Box Score

The game started messy with six fouls called in the first 18 minutes.  Several early shots by St. Olaf got the offensive juices flowing.  UW-W and the Oles each shot four times in the first half.

The second half featured more shots, but the same result, no goals.  UW-W ripped seven shots while St. Olaf launched five.  The 'Hawks put some pressure on St. Olaf in the last ten minutes of regulation getting off two shots and taking three corners.

UW-W took the only shot in the first overtime and it was blocked by a St. Olaf defender.  The 'Hawks also took a shot in the second overtime but St. Olaf keeper Alex Kuehl made the save.  Moments after the shot the 'Hawks won the game by virtue of the own goal.

UW-W goalkeeper Andrew Krueger (New Berlin/Catholic Memorial) was solid in the net making three saves in the match and recording a shutout.

Only fourteen players played in the lengthy match meaning Sunday's second round game will see some tired legs.  Dominican, UW-W's second round opponent, played their first round match just before UW-Whitewater's game, and their game went into double-overtime as well.  The two teams met previously this season on September 24 and walked away with a 1-1 tie.

The Warhawks will play at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Dominican's field in River Forest, Illinois.  The winner of the game advances to sectionals to be played on November 20-22 at a site to be determined.
