Located on the north end of campus in the Kachel Family Sports Complex, Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium has seen a wave of player and spectator enhancements. Prucha Field, as it was originally known, gave the Warhawk baseball program, which began in 1957, an on campus home. The field was named for professor Rudy W. Prucha, a teacher in the physics department who received the first excellence in teaching award in 1932. Prucha also served as the faculty athletic representative.
The first improvements to Prucha Field were additional fencing and permanent dugouts. The facility underwent a major facelift during the years Jim Miller directed the team to Division III prominence (1987-2003). Miller, a teacher and coach for thirty-four years, won 416 games and led the Warhawks into the NCAA playoffs seven times in seventeen years as baseball coach. Even after Miller officially retired from the University he maintained his day-to-day support of the program and UW-W athletics in general, including attention to the baseball facility.
The improvements have included batting cages, press box, umpire’s room, stadium seating for 400, a new backstop and fencing, irrigation, locker room, synthetic turf, entryway, sidewalks and scoreboard. Night games started after Eric Baldwin, a member of UW-W’s 2005 national championship team, donated lights in 2010. The facility, which was chosen to host NCAA regional tournaments 13 times in the past 20 years, was dedicated Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in 2011.
