NCAA III Regional Game Two: UWSP defeats Benedictine

UW-Stevens Point came back from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning to force extra innings where Ryan Schilter pushed in the game winning run on a single through the left side in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Pointers topped Benedictine 6-5.

Benedictine came out hot on offense posting three runs in the top of the first on a three-run homerun over the right field fence off the bat of Ryan Mullin.

The Eagles made it a 4-0 lead in the next inning with the help of two doubles.

The Pointers answered with a run in their half of the inning. Jimmy Coady led off the inning with a ground rule double down the left field line and advanced to third on an Eagle error. A fielder's choice two batters later scored UWSP's first run of the game. Point added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo lead off homer by Coady. Two more Pointers came in to score in the bottom of the fifth. Dan Douglas got things going with a one-single to center. Schilter followed with a double to score one and Coady notched a sacrifice fly to right to knot the score 4-4.

Benedictine scored in the top of the sixth on a two-out single to center by Mike Loni that plated Ryan Mullin to pull ahead 5-4.

Coady got in on the action again when he scored on a wild pitch in the Pointer half of the seventh to tie the game at five.

Both teams had opportunities over the course of the next two innings, but neither could capitalize and the game went into extra innings.

Benedictine squandered an opportunity in the top of the tenth.  With the bases loaded and one out, the Eagles could not score a run as Stevens Point relief pitcher Luke Watson shut down the Eagles with a strike out and a line out.

UW-Stevens Point wasted no time and loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth and scored the game winning run on a single through the left side of the infield by Ryan Schilter.

The Pointers improve to 36-9 and will play again Thursday at 6 pm against the winner of a game between UW-Whitewater and Case Western Reserve.  The Eagles fall to 32-11 and will face St. Thomas in an elimination game on Thursday at noon.
