UW-Whitewater Invitational II Recaps

Millikin Recap
UW-W evened the score with five-set matches Saturday, coming back from a 3-2 loss to Wartburg Saturday morning to defeat Millikin University 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11) in the afternoon. The win brings Whitewater's record to 15-6 while Millikin falls to 17-5.

After taking the first two sets, the Warhawks kept the next two sets close but couldn't close the door forcing the deciding fifth set. UW-W jumped out to a quick lead but Millikin bounced back and tied the set with the team's trading points until the Warhawks were able to string a few crucial points together for the 15-11 fifth set and match win.

Right side hitter Brittney Langley and outside hitter Jessica Sabey tied for a team high 14 kills with Langley adding three service aces. Teammates Leanna Lillge and Kristen Ruchti added 13 and 12 from the outside and middle hitting positions respectively. Ruchti and Ariel Johnston made good on their middle blocking positions combining for 10 blocks (one solo, nine assisted).

Kim Frei took on the setting duties dishing out 54 assists and adding four service aces. Katie Gray joined in the action from the service line with three more aces and paired with one more from Kelsey Nobilio, the Warhawks posted 11 total aces in the match. Nobilio notched her second-straight 30+ dig match and fourth of the season with 31. Three other Warhawks joined Nobilio in double figure digs including Chelsea Mutton with 15, Kaylin Byer with 14 and Frei added 14. 

UW-W will host UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC match-up Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Whitewater.

Wartburg Recap
The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team battled back from a two set deficit to force the deciding fifth set in the first match of day two of the UW-Whitewater Invitational. Unfortunately, it was the Knights who prevailed 3-2 (25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 16-25, 15-6) to move to 16-2 this season. The Warhawks are 14-6.

The Warhawks had the advantage in kills in the match but committed too many unforced errors including eight from the service line in the five sets played.

Leanna Lillge and Kristen Ruchti made their presence known at the net pounding down 19 and 14 kills respectively. Ariel Johnston thwarted six Knight attack attempts with two solo and four assist blocks in the contest. Kim Frei dished out 52 of the team's 57 assists. Defensively, libero Kelsey Nobilio notched her third 30+ dig match of the season and was joined by Chelsea Mutton and Kaylin Byer with 12 and 11 digs respectively.

The Knights had three hitters in double figures in the kills category with five more posting double digit digs in the contest. Wartburg combined for 11 total team blocks compared to nine total for the Warhawks.

UW-W will face Millikin University Saturday at 2:00 to conclude the second UW-Whitewater invitational of the season.

Cornell Recap
Similar to the first match of the day, UW-W notched their second win of the invitational in 3-1 fashion with set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-17.

Leanna Lillge and Jessica Sabey led Whitewater at the net with 16 and 12 kills respectively. Kim Frei garnered the setting duties with 42 of the team's 46 total assists. Defensively, the same five Warhawks that recorded double figure digs in the first match repeated the feat against Cornell. Libero Kelsey Nobilio led the way with 22 digs followed closely by Jaclyn Krizka's 20. Chelsea Mutton and Frei each had 14 and Lillge added 11.

UW-Whitewater is 14-5 this season and Cornell evens there record at 8-8.

The Warhawks will wrap-up competition in the invitational with matches at 10:00 and 2:00 Saturday against Wartburg and Millikin.

UW-Oshkosh Recap
The Warhawks battled for two extra point wins in the first two sets of the opening match of the UW-Whitewater Invitational Friday afternoon. UW-W took sets one and two 27-25 before dropping set three 25-20. Whitewater bounced back in the fourth set with some big offense to win 25-19 and take the match.

Four Warhawk hitters notched double figure kills led by Kristen Ruchti's top performance with 19 kills in 27 attempts while adding 10 assist blocks in the four set match. Leanna Lillge added 17 kills followed by Brittney Langley's 11 and Jessica Sabey rounded out the double digit hitters with 10.

Setter Kim Frei dished out 58 of the team's 63 assists in the contest. Five Warhawks recorded double figure digs led by libero Kelsey Nobilio's 28 digs. Chelsea Mutton and Frei added 14 each while teammates Lillge and Jaclyn Krizka added twelve a piece.

UW-Whitewater will face Cornell College at 7:00 Friday night before concluding the invitational with matches at 10:00 and 2:00 Saturday against Wartburg and Millikin.
