Box Score MONMOUTH, IL -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team opened their season with a 9-0 win over Monmouth (IL) on Friday. The Warhawks scored three times in the first half, then six more after the break, finishing with a 23-2 shot advantage and allowing no second-half shots.
The Warhawks turned early pressure into a 2-0 lead inside the opening nine minutes, earning corner kicks at 1:26 and 5:51 before
Mason Diercks (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) scored at 6:17 off a corner from
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) to
Luke Konrad (Buxtehude, Germany/Buxtehude Sued).Â
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) followed with a goal from an
Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) throw-in at 8:29.Â
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) kept Monmouth off the board with two first-half saves, stopping shots in the 15th and 20th minutes.Â
UW-Whitewater continued to create chances after the first half's midpoint, adding corner kicks and putting shots from
Tanner Mandalinci (Woodlands, Tex./John Cooper) and
Evan Brown (San Diego, Cal./Westview) on frame.Â
Caleb Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) closed the first-half scoring with just 13 seconds left before the break at 44:47.
Tino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic) fed the ball up to Bergman to send the Warhawks into halftime ahead 3-0.
In the second half, the Warhawks scored six times to finish a 9-0 win.
Lorin Baettig (Gettnau, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Willisau) opened the half scoring off
Andriy Collins' (Dublin, Ireland/Institute of Education) assist at 49:45 to make it 4-0, and the Warhawks followed with shots from Brown,
Matthew Hoover (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) and Collins in the next six minutes.Â
James Kiraly (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) added a goal at 62:32, and after a physical stretch that included multiple fouls and yellow cards,
Blake Lovick (Deforest, Wis./Deforest) scored at 73:01. The Warhawks kept the pressure on through the final 15 minutes, closing with back-to-back goals from
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) at 76:08 and 82:23 before
Owen Winegar (Arlington Heights, Ill./Fremd) converted a penalty kick at 85:10.
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) made two saves over 49:41 in goal and was credited with the win.Â
