WHITEWATER, WI -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team handed Loras College their first loss of the season with a 3-0 on Wednesday UW-Whitewater put eight of its 15 shots on goal and held the Duhawks scoreless on 16 shots, with all four saves coming after halftime.
The Warhawks started out with the pressure, as
Jasmine Wilson (Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) forced saves at 4:24 and 12:37,
Emily Taylor (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) sending a shot high, and
Aria Patel (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) putting another shot on frame in the 21st minute. The Duhawks pressed through the middle of the half, but the Warhawks came through a 10-minute stretch that included three Duhawks corners and four shots without conceding while the score remained 0-0.Â
After five combined fouls over the next nine minutes, the Warhawks pushed again with a
Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) shot and a 40:08 corner before the pressure broke through with a goal in the closing minutes by
Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest).
Simkowski put the Warhawks in front at 42:36, finishing a one-touch sequence assisted by
Jenna Laidlaw (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aberdeen Grammar) and
Brinley Dunsirn (Appleton, Wis./North) for the half's only goal.
The Warhawks scored twice in the second half to extend their lead.
Brooklynn Carlson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Dunsirn extending a 1-0 match into a 3-0 final.Â
The Warhawks didn't let up in the second half, as
Abby LaMere (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame) forced a save in the 53rd minute before Carlson finished Taylor's cross into the upper corner from about 12 yards at 56:13 to make it 2-0.Â
The Duhawks answered with a corner and a run of shots, including two on frame four seconds apart, but
Lauren Ripley (Brookfield, Wis./East) saved both, and the Warhawks kept the score at 2-0 through that stretch.Â
The Warhawks then generated their own pressure, getting two Simkowski shots and a Dunsirn attempt before Dunsirn scored at 75:22 for a 3-0 lead, and Ripley added two late saves as the Warhawks closed out the shutout. Ripley recorded four saves over 90 minutes and finished with a shutout.Â
The Warhawks improve to 8-2-1 on the season, matching their win total from last season. UW-Whitewater will begin WIAC play this weekend, heading to UW-River Falls on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 PM in River Falls.Â
