MENOMONIE, Wis. — UW-Whitewater opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win over UW-Stout Polytechnic on the road Thursday evening. The Warhawks rallied to take set four 27-25 after winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-16.
The Warhawks used a 6-0 run from a 9-9 tie to move in front 15-9 in the first set. After
Emily Lego's (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) kill made it 10-9,
Addie Bruns (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) served five straight points, with
Mackenzie Hartman (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) adding kills and
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) teaming with Krzus on a block. Stout closed to 21-18, but
Gaby DiMotto (New Berlin, Wis./West) answered with a kill and UW-Whitewater finished off the set 25-20.
UW-Whitewater created late separation in the second set when
Natalie Powers (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) served three straight aces, stretching the lead from 19-14 to 22-14. Hartman added five kills for the Warhawks, who finished the set 25-16.
The Blue Devils scored seven of the last eight points to claim set three 25-19 and extend the match.
The Warhawks fended off two set points before rallying to win set four. Dix registered a kill before a Blue Devil miscue tied the set at 24. The squads traded points before Dix and DiMotto secured the final two points of the set and match with back-to-back kills.
Dix finished with 14 kills on a .619 hitting percentage, adding six blocks. Hartman matched the team lead with 14 kills with an attack percentage of .462. DiMotto also tallied double digit kills with 11 adding 11 digs.
Krzus recorded 43 assists, six digs and four blocks.
Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) paced the defense with 14 digs in the contest.
