WHITEWATER, WI — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team defeated Wheaton College 1-0 on Wednesday night at Fiskum Field. UWW outshot the Thunder 23-7, put 15 shots on goal, and held the visitors to two shots on goal.
The Warhawks created the bulk of the opening-half chances, with
Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest),
Isabella Torres (Joliet, Ill./Central) and Wilson all taking shots in the first nine minutes. The pressure continued through a stretch of five corner kicks from 17:36 to 23:37, before the levy final broke when
Leah Dehne (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) found the back of the net in the 23rd minute.
Jasmine Wilson's (Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) cross to
Brooklynn Carlson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) helped Dehne score her 3rd goal of the season to reach to the 10-point milestone for the season.
Wilson's assist was her fifth of the season, now leading the Warhawks' in that category.
UWW kept the Thunder from answering in the half, allowing one shot and two corner kicks, and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Warhawks picked up right where they left off.
Ryan Kadlec (Lakemoor, Ill./Grant Community), Wilson twice, and Simkowski put shots on frame in the first 10 minutes, with the Wheaton keeper saving each.
UWW pushed again in the 67th through 72nd minutes, getting attempts from
Brinley Dunsirn (Appleton, Wis./North),
Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) and Simkowski, whose shot hit the woodwork, before adding another corner.
The Thunder generated pressure towards the end of the game, but
Lauren Ripley (Brookfield, Wis./East) saved Lily Lindquist's shot at 74:34 and UWW came through a sequence of Thunder chances from 81:10 to 82:25 without conceding.
UWW still created chances late with shots from Dunsirn,
Aria Patel (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and
Mak Terrill (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and multiple corners before Ripley made one final save as time expired to preserve the shutout. Ripley recorded her fourth shutout in goal, making two saves over 90 minutes.
The Warhawks earned their 6th win of the season, all of which have been shut-outs.
The Warhawks will take a quick trip over to Milwaukee to face Alverno College on Saturday, September 26th. They will then return home for a doubleheader with the men's team against Loras College. The women play the Duhawks at 4:30, followed by the men.
