KENOSHA, WI -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to Carthage, 3-2, on Wednesday at Art Keller Field. The Warhawks came back from a 1-0 deficit after the first half, but the Firebirds scored two unanswered goals in the final 10-minutes to give the Warhawks their first loss of the season.
The Warhawks generated most of the first-half chances.
Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had an attempt go left in the fourth minute,
Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) put a shot on frame at 8:33, and Simkowski forced another save at 12:29 as UW-Whitewater built early pressure.Â
The Warhawks continued to press midway through the half, with
Ryan Kadlec (Lakemoor, Ill./Grant Community) shooting left, a corner at 18:54, and another Simkowski shot saved at 22:29 while the score remained 0-0.Â
After earning corners at 25:00 and 30:26, UW-Whitewater followed with saved shots from
Rowan Severson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Jasmine Wilson (Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) before
Brinley Dunsirn (Appleton, Wis./North) added two late attempts. The Warhawks finished the half with 10 shots and three corner kicks, but the Firebirds' scored the late goal from their only corner kick of the half. With just one-second on the clock before the break, Carthage was able to take the advantage into halftime.
After
Lauren Ripley (Brookfield, Wis./East) got the half started with a saved shot in the 53rd minute, the Warhawks pushed back with four shots in a little more than two minutes before
Brooklynn Carlson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) converted a penalty kick off a hand ball inside the box at 58:06 to tie it 1-1. It was Carlson's first penalty shot conversion of the season.Â
Genieve Simkowski was the one to put UW-Whitewater in front 2-1 at 72:12, finishing off
Jasmine Wilson's (Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) assist. Simkowski has scored five goals in just three games, reaching the 10-point mark only four games into the season. Wilson now has had three consecutive games with an assist.Â
Ripley continued to make saves as the Firebirds pressed for the comeback, Ripley finished the game with five saves, all in the second half. Ast ime was running down, Carthage tied it on a goal at 79:21, then took the lead with just 2 minutes remaining in the game with their third goal of the night.
The Warhawks will make their home-opener against Grinnell College on Friday, September 11th. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 PM for UWW Women's Soccer Senior Night.
