UWW Pitchers Throw 27 Strikeouts in Doubleheader against Blue Devils

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team opened up their final WIAC series with two wins against UW-Stout. In the two games, the Warhawk pitching staff threw 27 strikeouts, with Sam Steuber (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) & Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) both having double-digit strike-out days.

Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) scored the Warhawks first run of the in the first inning. Thies stole third base, but an error on the pick-off allowed Thies to get home to put the Warhawks up 1-0 after just the first inning.

The Warhawks loaded the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, setting up an inside-the-park grand slam by Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Spring's shot found just the perfect gap between the Stout center fielder & right fielder to allow the Warhawks shortstop a quick run around the bases for the inside-the park homer.

Stout was able to add one run in the top of the 5th, but the Warhawks got it back with Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) coming around to score with a 2-out error. UWW added two more in the next frame, with Thies coming around to score on a double play ball, then Landen Seymour (Rockton, Ill./Honongah) hitting a RBI single to put the Warhawks up 8-1.

Steuber tallied up 14 strike-outs, tied for 5th most in Warhawk history. Skyler Sievert (Laguna Niguel, Cal./Dana Hills) finished out the last 2.0 innings with one more K, with the total of 15 strikeouts in game one.

In game two, the Warhawks took a two-run lead after scoring a run in the first & second innings. Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) got things started with an RBI single in the first. Kelli Grennier hit another RBI-single to put the Warhawks up 2-0.

Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) protected the two-run lead, holding UW-Stout scoreless in his 7.0 innings of work. Koenig fanned 11 batters in his outing, only allowing three hits.

The Warhawks added on two more runs in the 6th, with Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) making the heads-up play on a passed ball. McVay went from second to home as the ball rolled to the backstop. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) tacked on an RBI single to put the Warhawks up 4-0 after six complete.
