The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team extended their win streak to 18 with doubleheader wins against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday. The Warhawks battled back in game one, then had to fend off a late Titan comeback for the 8-7 win. In game two, the Warhawks flipped the script and bolted out to an early lead to take a 15-6 victory.
With inclement weather in Oshkosh, the Titans traveled down to Whitewater for the WIAC Wednesday doubleheader. Due to the location change, the Warhawks will head to Oshkosh on April 22nd for the second half of the series.
In game one, UW-Whitewater had their work cut out early, with the Titans scoring five runs in the top of the first. The Warhawks were unable to answer in the bottom of the frame.
The Warhawks held the Titans scoreless in the second, and Landon Seymour hit a two-RBI single to get UWW on the board & cut the deficit to just three.
Gradin Taschner (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) retired the side in order in the third, his last inning of work on the mound, setting up the Warhawks for a big offensive frame.
The first five batters got on with three singles and two walks. The single from
Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) brought in two runners, with
Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) adding an RBI single to tie the game up 5-5. Seymour drove in the go-ahead run to put the Warhawks up 6-5 after three complete.
Sam Steuber (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) pitched the next four straight innings, holding UW-Oshkosh to just four hits and not allowing a single run. The Warhawk offense added insurance runs in the 5th & 6th to take a three-run lead. In the 5th, Hopper's two-out double turned into a run after an overthrown ball on his steal to third, letting the third basemen reach home. In the 6th, it was
Brady Gilroy (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) with a solo shot to put the Warhawks up 8-5.
UW-Oshkosh threatened to make a strike in the 9th, scoring their first runs since the first inning.
Franklin Kirchner (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) got the final two outs, earning the save after protecting the lead.
In game two, it was the Warhawks with the hot start, having their own five-spot in the first frame.
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) &
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) each drew walks, with
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) scoring Holland on a double for the first strike of game two.
Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) traded places with Olson with another double, scoring two more for UWW.
Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) brought in Bowers with a sacrifice fly, &
Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) scored the fifth run of the inning with an RBI single.
The Warhawks added another in the second with a solo-shot by
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North). In the third, Hopper had his second sacrifice fly of the game to put the Warhawks up 7-0.
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) mowed through the Oshkosh order in game two, but the Titans finally added a run with a solo shot at the top of the 4th. Another two-run shot in the 5th for UWO dwindled the Warhawk lead to just 7-3.
The Warhawks bounced back, with Koenig retiring the side in order in the 6th in his final inning of work. Koenig notched strikeouts nine & 10 in the frame.
The Warhawks tallied six runs in the bottom of the 6th, putting their lead at 10 runs.

The Titans avoided the run-rule finish with a three-run homer in the top of the 7th.
Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) answered back with an RBI double in the 7th, then
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) pushed another runner through in the 8th to give the Warhawks a 15-6 victory.
The Warhawks will take on UW-Eau Claire this weekend in a four-game series. UWW sits atop the WIAC standings with a 10-0 conference record, with UWEC in second with a 6-2 record. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 PM at Carson Park in Eau Claire.
